transmogrification suggestion

right now, it's very difficult to tell what's "new to you" when you pick it up. this won't - eventually - matter, but it WILL matter [and i'm not sure how this is handled] for folks who want to take enchanting.

because there's already under-the-hood checks for "this is new to you" when you sell, maybe that can be made more explicit in the tooltip for the item as it sits in your inventory.

[i suspect this is just a db flag. and i suspect that it would be easy-ish to add it to the tool-tip as it is displayed to the player. but i am unsure. as always, if this is a large change that requires a silly amount of work, feel free to disregard it, but i feel it would - as all of your changes have - add to the realm and not detract from it.]

Hi Thalion, good idea, and you're right that it matters most for anyone who disenchants.

Here is how it works today. Appearances are collected for your whole account. A bind-on-pickup item adds its appearance the moment you loot it, and so does a quest reward. Any other item (bind on equip, or from a vendor) adds it when you equip it, or when you claim it from your bags: .transmog claim all collects every appearance you don't have yet from your bags at once, and names each new one in your chat. Running it before you sell or disenchant keeps the look, even after the item is gone. The one thing to know is that claiming binds the item to you.

Marking "new appearance" in the item's tooltip itself would need an addon on the game client. I've added it to the list of ideas, but I can't promise when.

my understanding from reddit [where i learned about the realm] is that you're trying to keep this project as self-contained as possible. given that the bare minimum is for players to just have a client [and to just alter the realmlist.wtf], i would say that if this requires some sort of addon to the game client, it should probably be scrapped for the same reason you eventually bailed on individual-progression.

[i understand why you did, but was sad to learn about that from the reddit post :)]

either way: thanks for the detailed response. much appreciated.

Glad it helped, Thalion, and you guessed our thinking well: nothing here should need more than the game client.

So it's done on the server instead. With today's update, when you loot or win a piece of gear that binds when equipped, that you can wear and whose appearance you haven't collected yet, the game names it in your chat. You can then equip it, or type .transmog claim and shift-click the item, before you sell or disenchant it. Either one binds it to you, which is why the message says so.

yup. saw this update today. very much appreciated and a good way to know what's new to you and what's not without involving new client side addons.

i WAS amused that the message triggered on shields [and looked it up to discover that i was remembering correctly that druids can't learn shields.] but i think that's a fairly small price to pay for it sort of missing that. it already helped into today's session a great deal.

i don't know quite how far down you can apply this sort of fix, but i saw that it worked on white and above gear. for grey gear, i still had to equip/unequip the gear for it to decide whether i knew it or not. [but i doubt too many people are going to do what i'm doing, which is sort of collecting every bit of clothing i can/as i run across it, just in case.]

once more, i do wish to thank you for your careful stewardship of this project.
